Fun fact! I’m a scientist, but that’s my second degree. My first degree was American history.
It seems like a lot of US quilters (or quilt influencers) are making a patriotic quilt this year – much like what happened in 1976 at the bicentennial. And I’ve been inspired to start my own quilt based on my understanding of American history.
Current State
The idea came to me in January, and my benefactor (it’s my mom) purchased the fabric and supplies this month. My initial instinct was to use the all-American log cabin design, but then we found this foundation paper piecing pad.

I immediately realized this was a more meaningful block. One of the US’s highest ideals is equal justice under the law, and Courthouse Steps is a great representation. Also my mom and I are kinda into FPP right now.
Naturally, I selected red, white, and blue fabric. There was another fabric I plan to use for sashing and border that I’ll reveal later. I chose calicos for the red and blue fabric because that reads classic Americana to me.
I cut my first strips of red and white and began piecing.

What I’m Noticing
This pattern is calling for strips an extra half inch larger than needed, and I’m so grateful for it. For one thing, placing the strips is much more forgiving. Secondly, it’s helping me achieve another meaning: the law is sloppy and imperfect. That’s also part of our history.
I’m really liking the red and white blocks so far!
Promising Trends/Refinement Needed
Foundation paper piecing gets easier with practice. Since the plan is for the blocks to be imperfect for artistic reasons, I’m really just doing my best as a complete novice. And also not trimming. For artistic reasons.
Next Steps

Finish remaining six red and white blocks. Then cut blue fabric and piece those eight blocks.
