Field Notes: I’m finally working on a large art piece

Strips of fabric that are the main feature of the piece

Throughout my 20s, I tried so hard to get my thoughts and ideas smaller. Job applications were looking for candidates with “great attention to detail” – and that just never was my strength. I always saw the big picture. And it was always big.

But I liked living in a house and eating so I worked at paying attention to details. I got so good at it I eventually earned a PhD looking at genes in plants.

But you can’t hide from who you are forever. I’m a big picture person.

Finally I am trying to make a Big Art.

I’ll get more into the design in future posts. For now, I just wanted to acknowledge that we can all come home to ourselves.

Here’s some pictures of how the piece is coming together so far.

A few sections sewn together
Making progress!
Actually not!
The template I’m sewing to. Foundation paper piecing is probably the best approach for this piece, however I might have been able to come up with an easier-to-execute design. That would have taken more time and I wanted to get this project going.
